Halloween Without the Scares: How to Keep Your Cat Safe This October

October brings cosy evenings, autumn decorations and Halloween celebrations. But while we enjoy the spooky season, some of our favourite decorations, treats and festivities can pose unexpected risks to our feline friends.

At Meow Petstore, we believe our cats deserve to feel safe, happy and loved all year round. Here are some simple ways to make October enjoyable for your cat, without any unnecessary scares!

1. Keep Halloween Treats Out of Reach

Halloween sweets might be tempting to curious cats, but many human treats are unsuitable for pets.

Chocolate can be toxic to cats, while sweets and other sugary treats offer no nutritional benefit. Sugar free sweets may also contain ingredients that are dangerous to pets.

Our tip: Keep trick or treat bags, chocolate bowls and sweet wrappers somewhere your cat cannot reach. If you suspect your cat has eaten chocolate or another potentially toxic ingredient, contact your vet immediately.

Remember, your kitty does not need Halloween treats to feel included. A favourite cat treat or a little extra playtime is a much safer way to celebrate!

2. Be Careful With Candles and Decorations

Pumpkins, fairy lights, candles and spooky decorations help create a festive atmosphere, but curious cats may see them as toys.

A playful paw can knock over a candle, while dangling decorations, ribbons and strings can become choking or entanglement hazards if chewed or swallowed.

Try these simple precautions:

• Choose battery operated candles instead of open flames.

• Keep electrical wires secured and out of reach.

• Avoid decorations with small pieces that can be swallowed.

• Put ribbons, string and hanging ornaments away after decorating.

• Supervise your cat around any new objects in the home.

Cats explore the world with their paws, noses and mouths, so a little preparation can prevent an unexpected trip to the vet.

3. Make Sure Your Cat Cannot Escape

Halloween can mean extra visitors, delivery drivers and frequent opening of the front door. For a curious cat, even a few seconds can be enough to slip outside.

If your cat is nervous around strangers, the noise and activity can also cause stress.

Before the festivities begin, prepare a quiet room with fresh water, a litter tray, a comfortable bed and somewhere to hide.

Make sure windows and balconies are secure, too. As we have shared in our own Meow Petstore family story, balcony accidents can happen even to cats who seem confident and agile.

If your cat wears a collar, ensure it is properly fitted and has a quick release safety mechanism. Microchipping also helps improve the chances of being reunited if your cat goes missing.

4. Give Your Cat a Calm Place to Hide

Not every cat enjoys visitors, costumes or loud noises. Some will happily investigate everything, while others prefer to watch from a safe distance.

Let your cat decide how much interaction they want.

You can help them feel comfortable by providing:

• A cosy covered bed or familiar hiding place.

• A favourite blanket that smells like home.

• Fresh water and access to their litter tray.

• Familiar toys and gentle play.

• A quiet space away from the front door and visitors.

Never force your cat to wear a costume or interact with guests. Their comfort matters more than the perfect Halloween photograph!

5. Keep Their Routine Familiar

Cats often feel most secure when their daily routines remain predictable. With visitors, decorations and changes around the house, try to keep feeding times, play sessions and bedtime as normal as possible.

A few minutes of interactive play can help provide mental stimulation, while puzzle feeders and familiar toys can keep indoor cats occupied.

If your cat seems particularly anxious, give them space and avoid introducing lots of changes at once.

6. Choose Pet Friendly Halloween Fun

Your cat can still be part of the festivities without being exposed to unnecessary risks.

Why not try a few cat friendly ideas?

• Set up an autumn themed photo spot using safe decorations.

• Offer a new toy or a favourite treat.

• Create a cardboard box hideaway for exploring.

• Spend some extra time playing together.

• Take a cute photo of your cat enjoying their own cosy corner.

Avoid essential oils, scented products and plants unless you have confirmed they are safe for cats. Some can be toxic, and lilies are particularly dangerous to felines.

If you are unsure about a decoration, plant or product, it is always best to check with your vet.
