Balconies & Cats: What We Learned After Two Scary Falls

A Meow Petstore Family Story……. Because Every Cat’s Safety Matters

❤️ Our Experience: Two Falls, Two Miracles

At Meow Petstore, we love our cats like family, because they are family. Earlier this year, our sweet girl Layla fell from our 3rd floor balcony. It was one of the most frightening moments we have ever experienced.

We did everything we could afterward to prevent it from happening again…

but a couple of weeks ago, her adventurous kitten Baby BuBu fell from the exact same spot.

💛 Against all odds, both survived.

💛 We are beyond grateful.

💛 And we are determined to help other cat parents avoid this fear.

This blog post comes from our hearts and from lived experience.

🏙️

Why Balconies Are More Dangerous Than They Seem

Even the most graceful cats are not immune to accidents. Balconies pose real risks:

🐦 1. Sudden distractions

Birds, bugs, and fast moving objects trigger hunting instincts instantly.

👣 2. Narrow railings

Cats love to perch, but balance isn’t perfect, one wrong move can be deadly.

💧 3. Slippery or unstable surfaces

Wet tiles, dusty floors, or loose mats can cause unexpected slips.

⚠️ 4. “High Rise Syndrome”

Vets frequently treat cats who fall from multi story buildings, even when they seem cautious.

Balconies simply are not designed with animals in mind.

😿

The Hard Reality We Faced

We tried to keep Layla and Baby BuBu off the balcony.

We supervised, blocked access, redirected their curiosity…

But as every cat parent knows, feline determination + a moment of distraction = risk.

These accidents happened despite our precautions and that is why we are sharing this openly:

If you have a balcony, it needs physical safety measures, not just good intentions.

🛠️

How to Cat Proof a Balcony (Meow Petstore Recommended)

These solutions can make the difference between danger and safety:

🕸️ 1. Install Cat Safe Balcony Netting

Strong, UV-protected netting is the #1 safest option.

It keeps cats inside while still letting them enjoy the view.

🔳 2. Use Plexiglass or Mesh Barriers

These close gaps in railings without blocking airflow or sunlight.

👀 3. Always Supervise Unsecured Balconies

If you haven’t cat proofed yet, treat balcony time like outdoor time.

🚪 4. Block Access When You’re Not Home

Close the door or use gates to prevent unsupervised exploring.

🌞 5. Offer Indoor Alternatives

Make the inside just as enticing:

  • Window perches
  • High cat trees
  • Sunlit spots
  • Bird-watching videos

Less temptation = fewer escape attempts.

💕

Our Happy Ending

Layla and Baby BuBu are safe, healing and back to their playful, mischievous selves.

We are reinforcing our balcony now with professional netting and we encourage every cat parent to take balcony safety seriously.

Your cat may not understand the danger…

but they trust you to protect them.
